[ARCHIVED] Video: Chief Polin Memorial

Poulin

On the evening of Saturday, Sept. 29th 2018, the Friends of the Presumpscot River unveiled a monument and memorial plaque at 89 Conant St. to pay tribute to Chief Polin, the powerful leader of the Abenakis who populated the area before European settlers.

As of today, The Chief Polin Memorial is the only one acknowledging Chief Polin and the first people of the Presumpscot River.

Chief Polin Memorial resides at The Farm at Conant Homestead, on a section of Portland Trails looking east toward the Presumpscot River. Chief Polin led the first documented dam protest in New England during the mid-1700s, advocating for fish passage to protect a vital food source for his people of the “dawn-land.”
