What you Need to Register Your Vehicle:

The City of Westbrook is an agent for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. This means the City has authorization from the State of Maine to process re-registrations and new registrations on most passenger type vehicles and commercial vehicles registered for gross weight less than 6,000 pounds.

 

We offer a wide variety of Specialty plates. To get a vanity plate you must go to a Branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicle.

Our busiest times of the month are Fridays and days around the 15th during a tax month (February, May, August, November).  You may avoid waiting in lines if you plan your visit around those times. Please review the information needed in order to process your registration:

  • State of Maine Renewal

    1. Proof of Insurance*
    2. Previous Registration
    3. Current Mileage
    4. If you have not previously registered your vehicle in Westbrook, you will need to provide proof of residency.

  • New Registration-Dealer Sale

    1. Proof of Insurance*
    2. Dealer Invoice
    3. Blue Application for Title (1995 and newer)
    4. Previous Registrations (if you are taking credit from a vehicle previously registered in your name and that you no longer are in possession of)
    5. Window Sticker showing Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price (if vehicle has never been titled)

 

  • New Registration-Out of State Dealer Sale

    1. Proof of Insurance*
    2. Title or Blue Copy of Title Application
    3. Dealer Invoice
    4. NOTE: You will have to pay sales tax on a vehicle purchased out of state unless you have proof of paying the sales tax in the state of purchase
 
  • New Registration-Private Owner

    1. Proof of Insurance*
    2. Bill of Sale (Must have year, make, model, VIN number, current mileage, date of sale, and a statement indicating the amount of the sale, who the vehicle is being sold to, and must be signed by the seller.)
    3. Previous owners Original Title Certificate if the vehicle is 1995 or newer. (Must be fully completed on the back side by the seller, showing who the vehicle is being sold to, current mileage, date of sale and must be signed by each of the individuals listed on the front of the title. The title must be free of liens)

 

  •  New Maine Resident

  1. Proof of Insurance*
  2. Registration from previous residence
  3. Proof of residency in our city (Drivers license, utility bill, lease etc.)
  4. Original Title Certificate if the vehicle is 1995 or newer. (The state of Maine will honor other states title laws)
